Highlights of Malofiej 27 in 17 sessions

The 27th edition of the Malofiej Infographic World Summit was inaugurated on Wednesday, March 27 at the Pamplona Planetarium with the attendance of 150 professionals from around the world and the screening of ‘Planetec, the dream of flying’. After the opening speeches by Javier Errea, president of the SNDE and coordinator of Malofiej, and Ramón Salaverría, representing the School of Communication of the University of Navarra, the participants enjoyed the exhibition ‘John Emslie (1813-1875)’, including a wide selection of works that the British engraver and draftsman made for James in the years immediately before and after 1850. An article on Emslie and his work, written by Lawrence Worns, can also be found in the Malofiej 26 volume, available in our store. Map4News offered a welcome aperitif to the attendees. The main sponsor of this edition was the power company Endesa.

On Wednesday, the Civivox Condestable, a beautiful building in the historic centre of Pamplona, ​​opened the exhibition ‘Cinegraphics, 55 films in 5 seconds (each)’, with works loaned from the Italian Matteo Civaschi and the publisher Flow Press.

After the sessions on Thursday, the first day of the conference, the ‘Videográficos’ session, open to the public, was held at the Navarra Film Library. The program included a selection of 14 pieces of different origins, topics and styles. At the end of the session the attendants had the opportunity to exchange with Alberto Cairo (University of Miami) and Jaime Serra, the author of 3 of the 14 exhibits.

What follows is a brief summary of the conference sessions:

• The sessions started on Thursday 28th with Alberto Cairo (University of Miami), who stressed how we lie to ourselves with infographics and addressed some common misconceptions: “A picture is worth a thousand words” or “Visualization is intuitive”, he said.

Sandra Rendgen and Michael Stoll introduced Taschen’s new book “The History of Information Graphics”, which goes on sale in May. In this new work, Rendgen analyses the evolution of data visualization from the Middle Age to the current infographic phenomenon. 

• Al Shaw (ProPublica, United States) spoke about several projects related to the visualization of floods and what we can learn from them about our past and future.

• Gregor Aisch (Datawrapper, Germany) made reference to the ‘monsters’ of his own creation, specifically the Datawrapper application. He told us what he learned when developing graphic tools for newsrooms, what to look for, how to apply standards to bar and line graphs…

• One of the surprises was Shirley Wu, who made a digital graphic on site and synthesized some lessons about curiosity, work process and design. She even created a website based on her speech, which can be found at: http://sxywu.com/talks/data-design-code.

 • Ricard Marfà (Ara) explained how he works in a small medium like Ara (Barcelona, ​​Spain), and how to deal with special works such as “All the goals of Messi”, “Names of newborns for undecided parents” or the election coverage.

• Yosune Chamizo (Animal Político, Mexico) presented the project “To Murder in Mexico: Impunity Guaranteed”, a research report on the impunity of murderers in her country, that includes infographics and videos. Animal Político published every day in parallel two versions of the same event: the version of the authority and the ordeal of the victims.

• John Burn Murdoch (Financial Times, United Kingdom), known in social networks by the graph https://twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1108337705086345218, explained how to change the mindset in a newsroom with graphics and presented the system applied in Financial Times so that readers can understand the graphics without having to be a designer.

• Laris Karklis (The Washington Post, United States) spoke about the art in the development of location maps and gave tips and tricks on how to survive to the creation of a breaking-news map.

• On Friday 29th, the sessions started with Antonio Farach (Times of Oman), who gave details of the research carried out in Oman to make large-format graphics and highlighted the importance of fieldwork.

Carol Cavaleiro (O Globo, Brazil) presented the coverage of the Brazilian elections in 2018 through the lens of Google Trends and answered the question “What do voters look for in Google about candidates?”. 

• Bernd Riedel (Ellery Studio, Germany) started his session showing his studio colleagues at a demonstration against climate change and how that interest led them to create “The Infographic Energy Transition Coloring Book!”

• Derek Watkins (The New York Times, United States) talked about how to place journalism in the place it deserves.

• Brian Jacobs (National Geographic, United States) showed a visualization that explores space and time with animated graphics.

 • Federica Fragapane (Italia) spoke about the visual narratives that connect with readers and how to make hightlighting, exciting and -at the same time- understandable graphics. She showed, among others, the works she has published in the supplement La Leittura (of the newspaper Corriere della Sera), and in The Stories Behind a Line.

• At the end of the congress, we had the opportunity to see the final works of the university student teams led by John Grimwade and Michael Stoll, and those from the professionals who attended the workshop “Show, Don’t Tell!”, facilitated by Monica Ulmanu (The Washington Post) and Jeremy White (The New York Times).

• The culmination of the congress, after the announcement of the most important awards, was a special session where Jaime Serra read a text supported by images taken from his works, with live music by Benet. The dinner and the awards ceremony were held at El Embrujo restaurant, where the date of the next Malofiej Summit was announced: March 23rd to 27th, 2020.
